I’m Citlalli Dunne, a Mexican-British designer and illustrator based in Mexico, with over 10 years of experience designing for social change.
I’ve worked with national, regional and international clients: organisations both small and large, across different languages and ways of working, on issues including sexual and reproductive rights, land and the environment, digital rights and privacy, action funds and care.
I specialise in Art Direction / Illustration / Design for Social Change / Strategy & Branding / Editorial Design
My design philosophy
I like working with people, and that sometimes means adapting the way we work and the methodologies we use, because no two projects are the same.
In the same way, the design process shouldn’t be static. It should be a flexible guide, open to being changed, modified, crossed out or discarded when necessary.
I’m interested in projects that seek to create a positive impact in this world, regardless of their size.
Projects that stand for life, dignity, enjoyment and pleasure, from whatever trench they may be working in.
I’d love to hear about your project :)
Here’s some of my work
Services
Art Direction
Research & Insights / Consultancy / Art Direction / Concept Development
With over 8 years of experience in art direction, I see it as a way of bringing coherence to what we say and how we communicate it visually.
It’s about finding the right language and visual codes to give a project a cohesive visual direction, from the big picture down to the smallest detail.
Branding
Research & Insights / Concept Development / Storytelling / Visual Identity / Logo Design / Type Selection / Colour Palette / Brand Guidelines / Visual Direction
Projects, brands and organisations are like people: each has its own way of expressing itself, which is why we talk about visual identity.
How does your project speak? What does it look like? Does it prefer lemon or passion fruit sorbet? Does it speak bluntly or whisper in your ear? Who does it hang out with?
An identity isn’t just a logo; it’s a whole visual system that brings everything together. It’s the colours we use, the primary and complementary typefaces, graphic elements, social media guidelines, photography style and many other things. The logo is just one part of that whole universe.
Editorial Design
Consultancy / Research & Insights / Concept Development / Layout & Typesetting / Zines / Books / Reports / Leaflets
Books, zines and reports can be as different and experimental as the project requires.
Here, you need to know the rules to know when to break them.
I have over 10 years of experience designing books, reports, story collections, research publications and zines in more than 6 languages and with different alphabets, and no two are alike.
Illustration
Editorial Illustration / Illustration for Books / Advertising Illustration / Portraiture / Cover Art / Animation Artwork / Illustration for Merch / Personalised Illustration
There are struggles fought with fire and rage, but also with joy and tenderness. My illustration is like that too: strong and complex, tender and playful.
Themes such as mental health, identity and gender, pleasure, intimacy, sexuality and bodies are recurring subjects in my illustration work.
I’ve worked on everything from portrait illustration for books, feminist tarot cards and editorial illustration for complex subjects, to anniversary merch and cover art for musicians and artists.
Graphic Design
Consultancy / Social Media / Merch / Infographics & Data Visualisation / Event Graphics & Materials
Sometimes, the thing we think we need isn’t actually the right solution for the project.
We can talk through and analyse your project to figure out what you actually need, and develop the right visual solutions and materials for you.
